Pre-K

Student-Teacher Ratio 12:2

Our Pre-K class offers a structured play-based learning environment. The curriculum is developmentally appropriate and aims to meet children where they are at and help them progress. We strive to give children a positive learning experience that prepares them to enter Kindergarten the following year by teaching the following concepts:

Mathematics

  • Counting numbers 1-20
  • Identifying numbers 1-10
  • One to one correspondence counting
  • Sequencing and patterns
  • Measuring
  • Identifying two-dimensional shapes
  • Sorting and comparisons

Literacy

We spend a lot of time reading and extending the ideas of the stories into our classroom activities. We try to choose a variety of subjects so that everyone can find what they enjoy. The goal is to help our students love to read through:

  • Sequencing stories
  • Building vocabulary
  • Talking about what we read

Phonics

Although we practice writing letters, young children can learn the building blocks of phonics by listening (phonemic awareness). We develop phonemic awareness and phonics skills through:

  • Recognizing letters and sounds
  • Rhyming
  • Syllables
  • Practicing the writing strokes of letters

Science

Through exploration and discussion, preschoolers learn that science is part of their life — and that it’s a lot of fun! In our classes we use a lot of hands-on, indoor and outdoor experiments to learn how to make predictions and observations.

Motor skills

Movement is at the very center of young children’s lives. It is an important facet of all aspects of their development. Our class aims to help our students develop both gross and fine motor movements through activities such as:

  • Holding a writing utensil
  • Cutting with scissors
  • Sensory play and learning activities
  • Playing games

Social and emotional development

Children’s learning is influenced in a large part by a range of social and emotional factors that we focus on:

  • Peer relationships
  • Pretend play
  • Communication and conflict
  • Sense of self including feeling good about themselves and what they can do

*Students will need to bring their own snack/lunch
